Day 6, Tuesday, January 30, 2018

North Shore Landing
Greensboro, GA

Relaxing day today.  Started out with a walk down to the lake.  Bit cold, 38*F or so with a bit of a  wind especially down at the lake.

Then trip to town to look at the Old Gaol.  A two story jail built in 1807. Built as the Greene County Superior Court recommended that they build a "substantial" jail.  Built of granite with walls two feet thick.  Think they succeeded.  Used for about 100 years.  The cells were veritable dungeons without light or ventilation.  This was the era of death by hanging.  There was a trap door on the second floor through which the prisoner was launched into eternity.

We then made a trip to Scull Shoals about 13 miles north of Greensboro.  Ancient indian tribes originally occupied this area before the Spanish came in and introduced European diseases which wiped most of them out.  The area then became a town with grist mill, then cotton mill then a power station.  As can be seen now, it is not just a historic site with few remaining buildings.

Day 5, Monday, January 29, 2018

Travel day today.  From Sycamore Lodge to North Shore Landing in Greensboro, GA.

Sunset at North Shore Landing

Getting ready for full moon in 2 days

Rained heavy most of the night.  Thought we were going to have to float out of here.  Luckily in the morning rain turned to mostly dizzle.  Packed up and got on the road.  By the time we got to Georgia, rain had stopped.  By the time we got hooked back up at the North Shore Landing KOA, it was sunshine, not a cloud to be seen.

Total miles covered 275 miles today, 688 miles total on this trip.

Day 4, Sunday, January 28, 2018

Sycamore Lodge, Jackson Springs, NC

Rained all day today, not hard but constant.  Due to the rain, we decided to go into Ellerbe and visit the Rankin Museum of American Heritage.
Nanette & Bob at Rankin Museum
What a terrific museum.  Little of everything.  I do believe Dr. Rankin was a hoarder, much to our delight.  This nice little museum is a bargin, $4.00 to get in, only $3.00 with AAA membership.
Has exhibits on geology, paleontology, ancient civilizations of South, Central and North America - includes tribes of the Rainforest, ceremonial dress, primitive hunting weapons, ancient tribes of the artic and everything in between.
Heritage of this region of North Carolina included exhibits on early farming, turpentine distilling, early doctors office, fashions of the times, etc.
Nanette in front of the sewing exhibit
One very interesting exhibit was on Andre the Giant.  Apparently he owned a ranch just outside Ellerbe and called Ellerbe his home.  Seven feet, 4 inches tall, weighing 540 lbs, I don't know about you, but if he was on the other side of the line in football, I think I would run.  His boot was enormous.  They had one of his NFL rings and one of his WWF rings.  They were the size of a shot glass!  He also was an actor, most known for playing Bigfoot on the Six Million Dollar Man.  Though he was born in France and died there (10 days after attending his dad's funneral), his wish was to have his remains returned to Ellerbe and his ashes spread over the ranch he so loved.  This was done.

Nanette also found an exhibit on early North Carolina sewing.  I tell you this place had a little of everything - including mammoth, mastodon, bears, etc.

Bob & Zeke Planning next few days
After the museum, Nanette and I hit the grocery store for some supplies.

Afterwards, Zeke helped Bob plan out the next few days, where to stay, routes, etc.  He is such a good helper.

Nanette & Zeke in front of General Store
Day 3, Saturday, January 27, 2018,
Sycamore Lodge RV Resort
Jackson Springs, NC

Relaxing day today.  Walked over to the General Store.  Small but nice.  Has about everything you would need.  Worked on Zeke's healing - did pretty good.
Then walked down to the stocked bass lake.  No swimming, but had pedal boat, canoes and kayaks.
One of the cabins near the lake had a water wheel.  Really cool, but then I thought, "Could I sleep with all that noise?"  Getting old.
Bob & Zeke hanging out

We then headed over to the dog run again.  Made Zeke run back and forth with Nanette at one end and I at the other.  He loves the smells there.  Took the long route back.
I watched a movie, Nanette worked on her quilts.  Nice and relaxing day.

Day 2, Friday, January 26, 2018

Packed up ready to go.  Started engine and terrible buzzing sound.  Got out to find out what was going on and lo and behold, forgot to retract the stabilizers.  What a wonderful safety feature!  Love this rig.
Lunch at North Carolina rest stop.  Zeke loves getting out with all the new smells.  Did much better today.  Nanette put the dinette table down and put a quilt on the table and bench.  Zeke laid there the entire travel time, loving looking out the window.  He is in his element.

Arrived Sycamore Lodge after 288 miles.  10.38 mpg today.
First time hooking up all the utilities, water, electric and sewer.  Unloaded car as we will be here until Monday.
Trying to plan next few days so we can make reservations - we need to make them 3 days in advance.  Had a bit of help though!

Day One, Thursday, January 25, 2018
And We Are Off!

Left a bit later than our planned 10am departure - 1:15pm, but at least we are off!  All loaded up on our first adventure.

Zeke not too sure.  Sat/laid between seats for the entire 125 miles, 3 hours and 15 minutes.  Loved all the new smells when we stopped.

Shenandoah Crossing Resort, first stop.  Great resort.  We will need to come back in warmer weather.  It is close to Charlottesville, VA, so good place to stay to visit Monticello and Montpelier historic homes.  We will do this.

Did not hook up water as the night temperature dropped to 20*F.  Did not want to risk freezing lines.  Heater worked very well, thankfully.

Thor Freedom Elite 24 FE ran very well, no issues with pulling the Cube.  First fill up - 10.56 mpg
